Eastham was the original land area that is now called Wellfleet. Billingsgate was an early name given for the town and the harbor by early Pilgrims after a great fish market in England. Wellfeet was finally incorporated as it's own town in 1763. Originally known for it's oysters, Wellfleet became a whaling town until Lorenzo Dow Baker, owner with his brother in-law of the United Fruit Company, bought the Mercantile Wharf and built the Chequesset Inn turned Wellfleet into a sought after resort area.
